I was lucky enough to attend one of his concerts a couple of weeks back -- Wow! His ensemble is pretty amazing, and the music was hypnotic and beautiful, which led to standing ovations at the end.

I'm curious to know what everyone thinks of his film compositions? I've heard many say his music is "too obtrusive" but I don't know, I haven't seen a film yet with his music that did. I've recently purchased "The Illusionist", think it's pretty great. (the film is solid, too)

As a film composer, Glass varies wildly between being incredibly annoying (as he is in Notes on a Scandal) or damned close to brilliant (as he is in The Illusionist). It's about fifty/fifty to me.

That said, I think he does better in the fantasy/SF/horror genres than he does in realistic drama. I pretty much despised his score for The Hours, but his two Candyman scores I find riveting. About the only exception to this rule that I know of is his Mishima score, which is for my money, the best music I've ever heard come from him.

I was talking with a film critic recently and we agreed that Glass should have been nominated for "The Illusionist" instead of "Notes on a Scandal".

I think some of the best music he's written for film is definetely "Kundun", IMO. Anyone familiar with his unreleased score to "Taking Lives"?

He should have won the Academy Award for Koyaanisqatsi, one of the most original film scores of the 1980s, or Kundun, which is considerably more interesting than Titanic).
