1/ Pre-Announcement & Ready-to-Ship Release a/ Announcement Warn people a week ahead of the release, so that (almost) everyone can organize themselves not to miss it, should it sell out fast. Telling the next release is only two weeks away can also be useful, to organize & group orders. b/ Release Release the CD when it is in stock. 2/ Clues I can't play the clue games because I lack the necessary encyclopaedic knowledge and the will to check whether this or that was produced by duch or such studio, and therefore can be released or not. Yet I understand it can be funny, and have no reason against it, especially as small bits of information on movies & scores may be revealed on such occasions. The only thing really annoying about has nothing to do with the lable: reading always the same thing; we know the most requested titles, and need not see them endlessly repeated. |

I like the Varese method: Announce an announcement, make the announcement, ship the discs. The clues don't add that much. However, I think you should add to any announcement of an announcement the following: "...and no, the disc we will be announcing and shipping [next week] will not be Alien, Spartacus, or Back To The Future Part Anything." |

If possible I would like to have everything with a run of less than 2000 copies being announced in advance but not being available for purchase. Knowing in advance what the title is can put the stress away that you might miss a CD that is very important to you or you have enough time to decide wether or not you actually really want to buy the CD instead of just buying it out of the panic that ebayers may be faster. It would also be possible to plan the budget accordingly. The clues really just make things worse actually because they raise anticipation, which may be good for the label when minor titles with low print numbers sell very fast due to the hype but it can be a really tough situation for the individual because of reasons described above. |
