BITE THE BULLET is a superb Western score. When I originally saw the film some 25 years ago I missed the beginning and didn't know who composed the music; at that time I guessed (based on the style of the music and the intelligent way in which the music was placed) that it might have been Jerry Goldsmith. When I found out it was Alex North, I became very interested in his other work. BITE THE BULLET was the score that made me notice Alex North by name.

Wonderful script with some really killer lines of dialogue that out of context mean nothing but for those of you have seen it... "The people some people marry." "I don't know a damn thing about nothin' but I ain't the one who's lost." "It must be [important]. He said it twice." "[I like it] without conversation." "Why don't you tell me the story of your life. Just skip everything but the last five minutes." "My horse is the luckies horse in the west, but he never plays cards for money." "I'd rather be in hell than Oklahoma."

I met co-star Robert Donner once and he thought this was one of the best films he'd ever been in and the shame of it was that they came out the same as Jaws and got creamed.

The one problem I have with the CD -- and I'm glad it exists, don't get me wrong -- is that there is a lot of music from the underscore that is not there, yet every single traditional source cue is there. I'd have much preferred North's music to all the source music.
