Chinatown was not a re-recording, but a reissue of the original soundtrack album.
"Best Ever" is a real hard one. Here are ten I like in no particular order:
The Ghost And Mrs. Muir conducted by Elmer Bernstein for FMC
Ben-Hur conducted by Miklos Rozsa
A Midsummer Nights' Dream (Korngold/Mendelssohn) conducted by Gerd Albrecht
The Adventures Of Mark Twain conducted by William Stromberg
The Day The Earth Stood Still conducted by Joel McNeely
It's A Wonderful Life conducted by David Newman
Jane Eyre conducted by Adriano
To Kill A Mockingbird conducted by Elmer Bernstein for FMC
Jason And The Argonauts conducted by Bruce Broughton
2001 conducted by Jerry Goldsmith
You really can't go wrong with the Morgan/Stromberg boys, though the quality of their recent recordings has improved over their first ones. Similarly, Charles Gerhardt is a name you can trust, even though he and arranger Chris Palmer always gave their recordings a "polish" that annoys the purists - I like how they preserved the core of the music, but pruned away some of the more mechanical digressions.
Note to producers: Please, please consider recording Waxman's The Philadelphia Story one of these days with the original orchestrations.
