Steven, Thanks for your insight and vour pointing out the irony of Mr. Waxman's two-in-a-row win being tied by a guy who probably (back then) wouldn't even be allowed to transcribe for Mr. W's orchestrator. What a sad commentary on the nature of the "Academy's" lack of any credible judgement or selection. Also, thanks for the comment regarding Goldsmith's naming of Waxman as his own favorite composer. Like many I think this score to be one of the greats. The "Building the Spirit" montage is world class. The one discordant note for all this is the lack of a stereo recording. Of all the scores I can think of right now (beyond LAND OF THE PHAROAHS, perhaps) I'd say this one needs stereo. All those woodwind runs, trills, flighty figures in the strings, whatever. It's what stereo was born for! You get a good idea when you watch the movie on DVD, of course, but you have to listen through all those sound effects. Then again, you get to watch that great montage! --Doug |
