I am not much for the academy awards. Except for last night, I have not watched them in over 10+ years. Why? It is a high fashion show spectacle. The organizers try to think up the most wacky entertainment (althought the shadow dancers was kind of original) to amuse the audience. I found most of last night a general waste of time with the exception of Morricone's award.
I truly feel that his award, or any honorary oscar, is far more important than those given for any given category. Think about it. Morricone was honored for his liftetime achievement for his work in the filmscore industry. That is more meaningful to me (and it should be to him) than any oscar for any particular score to any particular movie at any particular time. Many winners for any given film are easily forgotten over time, but not lifetime achievement award winners. Their careers have lasted a long time and have impacted the industry in many very positive ways. To honor Morricone for his career says something more than honoring him for a single filmscore. It speaks of longevity, endurance, hard work, his love for the industry, his expertise in what he does and more. This oscar should not be viewed as a condolence award for not winning in the past. It means so much more than that and I think he himself would consider it the crowning glory to his achievements over and above any oscar he might have won in the past.
