Post subject: | Documentary Film Scores |
I have been overseeing the music on a documentary this past week, so I have been feverishly devouring documentary film scores, both released and unreleased. INTRADA definitely has had their hand in making available provisions regarding scores to National Geographic specials, of which I agree with popular opinion that there should be more made available. The music in this category is often just too good NOT to be heard away from the films that they were intended. So, I was just wanting to start a thread and get some feedback on what are some of your favorite documentary film scores, released or otherwise? I am away from my collection, so I don’t have the advantage to pull any specific titles, but a few that come to mind would be John Scott’s Jacque cousteau’s releases, countless IMAX scores and specials for PBS, BBC and so on. Just to get things rolling, here are a few titles, some obscure, that are just off the top of my head. All of these have been RELEASED. Composer - website • score ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Lee Holdridge – http://www.leeholdridge.com/ • EL PUEBLO del SOL Brian Kean - http://www.briankeanemusic.com • ANSEL ADAMS • THE WAY WEST Nicholas Hooper – ? • LAND OF THE TIGER Hans Zimmer – http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fu ... =149325167 Mark Mancina – http://www.markmancina.com/ • MILLENNIUM Trevor Jones - http://www.trevorjonesfilmmusic.com/ • FIELDS OF FREEDOM • WE FIGHT TO BE FREE Alan Williams – http://www.alanwilliams.com/ • AMAZON • ISLAND OF THE SHARKS Sam Cardon – http://www.samcardon.com/ • LEWIS AND CLARK • WHALES •TEXAS: THE BIG PICTURE Kurt Bestor – http://www.kurtbestor.com/store/store_s ... inametique • SEDONA: SPIRIT OF WONDER • WILDLIFE ADVENTURE Martin Kiszko - ? • BATTLE OF THE SEXES • OCELLIUS SUITE: ALIEN EMPIRE George Fenton – http://www.debonairrecords.co.uk (other?) • EARTH • DEEP BLUE • BLUE PLANET Nigel Westlake - http://www.rimshot.com.au/ • SOLARMAX • ANTARTICA Lalo Schifrin - http://www.schifrin.com/ • THE HELLSTROM CHRONICLE Ian Butcher/Steven Faux (?) • THE LIFE OF BIRDS Steve Heitzeg - http://www.steveheitzeg.com/ • DEATH OF THE DREAM Edward Bilous - http://www.edwardbilous.com/flash/homepage_flash.html • SCOTTSBORO • PORTRAITS OF GRIEF • FRONTIER HOUSE Christopher Gunning - http://www.christopher-gunning.co.uk/ • WILD AFRICA Alex Wurman - http://www.alexwurman.com/ • MARCH OF THE PENGUINS Brian Bennett - http://www.brianbennettmusic.co.uk/framepage.htm • GREAT WONDERS OF THE NATURAL WORLD Sheldon Mirowitz - http://www.sheldonmirowitz.com/ • COLUMBUS AND THE AGE OF DISCOVERY • EVOLUTION • TROUBLESOME CREEK • ODESSY OF LIFE Michael Whalen - http://www.michaelwhalen.com/buy.html • SHAPE OF LIFE • SLAVERY AND THE MAKING OF AMERICA • LOST LINERS • NATURE: PHANTOM OF THE FOREST • TITANIC; ANATOMY OF A DISASTER Needless to say, this is a healthy start to this thread, and there are a wealth of composers to focus on and equally great music to share and be discovered. Lets hear your feedback. ~ Scorehead |

Keeping in tow with the topic of documentary scores, is anyone at all familiar with this film or, more importantly, it's score? "HUBBLE – 15 YEARS OF DISCOVERY" - http://www.movetwo.de/ Looks like the DVD comes complete with a score CD. Most of the DVD reviews that I've read make mention of the music being one of it's better features, but I am unfamiliar with the German based composers, Axel Kornmesser & Markus Löffler. Looks like its pretty much a production for the European Space Agency (ESA), done in Greece, with music by German composers that has a heavy use of celtic flavors. Sounds pretty eclectic... any opinions? ~ Scorehead |

Lots of drum loops and cooing solo voices, but no real substance. Seems more like a missed opportunity than anything else. With such great visuals, it would have been ideal to have had music that was as immersive and, should I even say, thought provoking. - Oz |
