The two discs of National Geographic music are some of my favorite Intrada releases. I know I simply cannot be alone in this opinion.

Why am I bringing this up? Well, in the speculation of "what have you found", I'd remembered from the liner notes of the Bernstein/Moross Yankee Sails.../Grizzly! discs, you'd mentioned that Lalo Schifrin had composed music for National Geographic, and I know that stuff hadn't made it onto CD yet.

So is it possible that this music is what you'd found? I'm not expecting a yes or no answer to that specifically, but I thought I'd like to let you know how much I appreciated the first two discs, and how much I'd like to see more of this stuff released...especially if it's anywhere near as cool as the first two platters.

Hear, hear!

I'm up for more NG volumes too. Rescue all you can from those vaults! If you have to limit them to 1000 copies to sell, so be it.

I understand that Lee Holdridge's THE GREAT WHALES is from a National Geographic special. I would really like to see the complete score released some day. The Gerhardt recording of the main theme is so incredibly beautiful.

Well, you're not alone in that opinion! I don't know about Lalo Schifrin (but would welcome and immediately purchase any disc by that composer anyway) but I do remember that the late Walter Scharf wrote some grand music for two or three of those National Geographic documentaries. I'd love to hear more of this man's work. Under-rated? It ain't the word!

Along these lines, The Cousteau Odyssey had some great scores:

Elmer Bernstein did a nice one for "Diving for Roman Plunder" (1978) and George Delerue did a swell score for "The Nile" (not sure if this was Odyssey or not).

I hope these get considered, too.

Some hands have changed at the licensing end of NG. I can't predict the future but things have moved to the back burner for the moment.

Sorry to hear it.

Just do what you can. :)

As long as you know there's still interest...

David, Mr Bernstein also composed the music for "Calypso's Search for the Britannic" for the Cousteau people. Superior documentary scoring which I hope will see the light of day on CD someday.

I got the one with Rosenman, and had to trade if off.

for me, just because it uses a real orchestra and has good orchestrations, doesn't equal a good score. I thought it was a complete waste of time -- even the Rosenman one.

And what's more, the version of the theme wasn't my favorite.

I may be in a minority, but I think we won't be seeing many more of these NG CDs.

Roger, how are they selling?

Well, I'll chime in too as I've never been a Rosenman fan. IMO, the first National Geographic twofer was LOADS better than the second.

I got the second one because I love Ernest Gold, but I was even pretty disappointed with his score, considering it's called The Last Vikings and all.

The Bernstein/Moross disc however was fantastic.

I remember reading several reviews of the second National Geographic CD that complained about how Ernest Gold's score wasn't some kind of head-butting, ass-kicking, Goldsmithian action fest. I guess nobody's ever seen a National Geographic special before. LOL!

Diff'rent Strokes and all that but I'd like to chime in hoping for more releases in this series. So many different composers wrote music for those things that they could release another dozen discs (I can dream, can't I?) before going near another Rosenman score.

In the interests of full disclosure I should add that I'm of the small minority that rather likes Leonard Rosenman's particular brand of noise. ;)

Dude, I wasn't expecting a Goldsmithian action fest, but I was expecting some high quality memorable Ernest Gold orchestral writing and memorable THEMES at the very least.

I found lots of the Bernstein and Moross scores to be "catchy"...not so with the Gold and Rosenman ones.

On the subject of documentary scores, I was wondering what John Scott's work was like for the Cousteau films he scored ?

...and I like Rosenman's work very much.
