I saw this post over at FSM - what is he talking about? The CD sounds just great to me:

If anyone else is still wondering why the Morton Stevens CD has such extreme stereo definition and unusual bass: It's because all the celli and basses have been moved to the left hand of the stereo spectrum instead of the right where they belong. The only exception seems to be "Sheva Gives Again". The unfortunate result is that some melodic lines get kind of lost in the mix, and sometimes the right channel is almost mute. A pity about this otherwise great release.

This title is one of my TOP favorites in my collection - I really enjoy the Goldsmith material, but it's the Stevens portion that really hit the mark with me.

Anyway, a perfect presentation and I thank Intrada for producing such a wonderful 2-CD set. I hope that the people who wanted it, got one!

Doug, while I hopefully got you here, can you clear something else up (with an additiona question):


I remember reading that the Intrada release of this screo was still not the original recordings and that in fact a nubmer of tracks are different to their respective film counterparts.

Is this true?

As per Roger's initial post:

This is the premiere release of the recording sessions from the miniseries. Intrada had access to all of the original scoring session elements stored in the Universal vaults plus studio paperwork and engineering notes for this release. As with other recording projects done at Universal, the actual sessions were made partially on 2” 24-track tape and partially on ½” 4-track tape, depending on session dates, orchestra size and other engineering needs.

I would find anything else than what he says on the topic in regards to what Intrada worked with for this release to be rather unlikely. As for why the VS re-recording has not been included, I suppose the ever popular "legal/contractual reasons" are involved.

Just a superlative release, I have been so enamored with the Goldsmith material that I still have not listened to the Morton Stevens portion. I hope this wonderful CD will eventually be released again in the future for new people discovering Jerry Goldsmith.

I certainly don't prefer the Stevens disc to the Goldsmith one but I do concur that the Stevens disc is excellent and you should really check it out RM as it completes the story!
