Intrada crossfaded two cues together, a second in time that completely ruins the listening experience of a CD that runs over an hour. La-La-Land left off an alternate cue that didn't appear in the movie or on the original album but everybody knows about it because it was on the bootleg. FSM put out a box set of a film series' scores instead of each individually, when everyone knows that it was the second film's score that was really the good one. Kritzerland had the audacity to release something that somebody doesn't want. Quartet's most recent release was not the surprise unearthed tapes for Moonraker. Buysoundtrax just spent a lot of time and effort on a new recording of an electronic score, but it isn't completely, exactly, precisely the same as the original soundtrack recording and is therefore useless. Perseverance mastered an album from an LP, and even though they mentioned that's what they did, somebody noticed a crackle thirty seconds into track 7. GNP Crescendo used Crillee on some of their releases, rendering the track listings unsightly.
Varese is hardly alone in getting flack. The main difference is that nobody who works there participates in the communities, so they seem to only be represented by the complaints. This is not to say that some of those complaints haven't been justified (the G.I. Joe situation is an example), but accusations directed toward them aren't usually answered, so all one hears is the accusation.
On the other hand, it is clear that the people who do participate often find it difficult to do so. Trolls and just straight-up whack jobs, along with people who are otherwise reasonable but have a particular axe to grind, often make the online community a minefield. I remember M.V. from LLL dealing with a particularly hostile and ignorant person regarding his comprehensive edition of Elfman's Batman score which almost made him quit; when one puts so much effort and passion into something only to have it torn down by somebody who has no idea about anything, it must make it difficult to care.
