The Burbs gets the deluxe treatment!

The arrival of my copy today was quickly followed by the ceremonial disposal of the 'unmentionable' issue.

This Varese Club release is longer (two extra cues) and sounds a thousand times better!

I think Joe Dante was a huge fan of Patton, since Jerry used the famous echo trumpet motif many times in The Burbs + a parodic imitation of Patton's march, and then Joe Dante directly used a cue from Patton's rerecording in Small Soldiers 9 years later...

Interesting footnote: the trailer is scored almost entirely with Bernard Herrmann's The Trouble with Harry! According to music editor Ken Hall, Joe Dante used to temp-track a lot of his Goldsmith scored pictures with Bernard Herrmann's music, which used to drive Jerry Goldsmith nuts! Reportedly, Explorers was also filled with Herrmann's music.

Yeah, I suppose this was all in good fun: Joe Dante looks like a modest, very nice guy. There's a very interesting book published in France by Cahiers du CinÃ©ma: Joe Dante et les Gremlins de Hollywood, basically a very long Joe Dante interview by Bill Krohn, where Dante gives some details about his working relationship with Goldsmith. Dantes explains how Explorers, for instance, was temp-tracked in a few spots with Fahrenheit 451. A concept Jerry Goldsmith found rather off the wall: "Do you want it to be this sad?"... Interesting.
