This soundtrack is superb! Well done to all involved! I have waited years to hear this score, and to hear it in such beautifully pristine condition is just the absolute tops! Thank you again!

The liner notes state that the 'wide screen' theatrical version of the film revealed Spielberg in the back seat in some of the shots.

How is this possible?

DUEL was shot and framed (?) in the 1:33 aspect ratio of US television.
A conversion to theatrical ratio of 1;85 would merely require the masking of the top and bottom of the frame.

The only way more image could be revealed at 1:85 (or, 1:66/1:75) is if Spielberg hard-matted the negative at say 1:66 and blew up the image to 1:33 for television.
But, the notes say it was nOT initially intended for theatrical release.

Just finished listening to "1941" (courtesy of La La Land) and now checking out "Duel." Talk about a study in opposites.

One cue that I really love is "Studying Drivers," which features a lot of interesting work for strings and percussion, not to mention perfectly reflecting the tension of the scene as poor Dennis Weaver tries to figure out which of the diners in the cowboy boots is his tormentor. Very minimalist in spots, but never boring or tiresome to these ears. I'm so glad to finally be able to hear this apart from the film, and must admit another note of relief that the masters for this (and "The Car") were spared from deterioration. Happily, it's now preserved and I can't thank all of you at Intrada enough.

Here's hoping that Universal will continue to allow you to save these scores from being lost forever.
