Jewel case.

Even if it means having to use one of those thicker cases which can hold up to 6 discs.

Digipacks are OK and I'm sure they look nice but even if you are very careful accidents can still happen and before you know it.... *rip*. Happened to me and I'm very careful - trying to get a CD out from the sleeve - now have a small rip on the spine.
Now I could rebuy if I so wished as it's still available but on a soundtrack CD which is likely to have vanished in a couple of years that just wont be an option.
Plus over time anyone looking on ebay for one is only ever going to find ones with damage.

At least if you get a scratched/scuffed CD case it's easy enough to change them to get it looking as good as new.

My own preference for jewel case over digipaks (vote already recorded, Roger) is, as stated by some others, based on the more convenient replacement of jewel cases if necessary. Innocent accidents can happen even to careful collectors through handling; but even though I've never yet damaged a digipak, there's always the chance it can happen. And these releases become more urgent collectibles as soon as they sell out, so I'd rather have the option to replace and restore the original packaging if necessary.

But to clarify, if it's music I want, I would never decide to skip a CD release based on its packaging.

Maybe many collectors would be swayed if they knew about the possible cost savings to Intrada if they moved to digipak. We know that these albums are expensive to produce with many entities permitted to their share.

Given the large volume, increasing obscurity and decreasing popularity of releases, perhaps many collectors would be perceptive to cost savings in production if digipaks are in fact significantly cheaper over time.

I like digipak releases. They have a more classy look as a jewel case. But they should still have plastic trays for holding the discs. If you need to slide your disc in and out of a cardboard sleeve, it won't take long to scratch your disc.

If I have a choice, I prefer Jewel Cases by far. Digipaks can't be replaced if something happens to them, and they get damaged so easily.

and I voted for Jewel Cases.

Just voted for jewel case -- because I live at the other side of the world from you and it happens that jewel cases arrive broken here in France... And yes, you got it, I can change a jewel case, there's nothing I can do to repear digipacks.

Writing from mobile, so in short: Generally, I do think jewel cases are preferable to digipaks for basically the same reasons already mentioned. They are easily replaced. However, some digipaks are quite nice. I wouldn't mind an occasional digipak release. They may be neat for certain releases (like the Rhino Ben Hur set).

I went with the jewel case. I just prefer it much more than the digipaks.

After 250+ ISCs in my collection and as a devout confessed bottle cap completest I would hate packaging variations in the collection.
Prefer to stick with Jewel Cases for collection conformity even if it costs slightly more on the P&P.
