Although Goldsmith is my favorite composer, I would choose Elmer Bernstein's THE GREAT ESCAPE.

Tough question. I'd take Ben Hur.

E.T. was on my really short list, too. Finally went for my first Goldsmith record. There's no perfect option here. It's just picking that one score you most likely will not tire of under any circumstance. Not an easy choice. But maybe fun to try here since there are no consequences to be had.

Jeff said to think of like you're house is burning down and you race into the flames and have to grab just one album under ridiculous pressure and there's no time and you just lunge at that library and grab and hope for the best. I still grab for In Harm's Way and pray I didn't grab Inseminoid instead. LOL.

And you grab... ?

Poltergeist

For me that score is like the ocean to Stromberg at TSWLM:
"James Bond: Don't you miss the outside world?
Stromberg: For me, this is all the world. There is beauty... there is ugliness... and there is death." -

This should a very obvious answer coming from me. :) You know--recently I allowed my daughter to watch Hocus Pocus for Halloween, and of course I was humming and tapping Debney's score to her manic amusement. The energy, the smiles that Debney conjures with his music is without a doubt unforgettable to me. Sure--it's not a deeply melancholy or perhaps an Oscar-winning score of social importance, but it's a very important work to me. I had a very difficult time in my youth, and Debney's score along with Ortega's film really got me through some difficult times. I still admire the lighthearted flare and just pure fun of both. Of course, I can't run through the fire and grab Debney's score as of yet, so I'll just have to forget the thousands of CDs I own and go after the new Blu-ray on my shelf. At least it features the music in some way! ;)

P.S. Stay Tuned is already in three separate locations. So, no worry there.

Our Man Jeff didn't help things for me with his "burning house" context. If all my collections were threatened with imminent destruction, I'd probably run upstairs past all my music to rescue at least one 16mm Technicolor print (while hoping my wife would grab both the cats!).

But your original conditions were tough enough, Doug. For me at least, there's such a vast range of emotions (without even considering the context of dramatic associations) tied to the soundtracks I've collected through 45 years, that the prospect of only one for the rest of my life seems so ... spartan.

And context, as so often happens, is nearly everything. Goldsmith is MY favorite and IN HARM'S WAY is a great one, while ISLANDS IN THE STREAM is one of my three top favorites. But forced into isolation on that island of yours, having nothing to hear but the poignancy of either of those two would eventually push me to drown myself.

I would need variety. And since Goldsmith's incredible versatility is one of the qualities that made me declare him my favorite so long ago, my choice for the island would be GOLDEN BOY. That's not the 1938 boxing picture, but a 157-minute double-CD-R anthology of my favorite Goldsmith film/TV themes and cues from the 1960s (which I compiled as a nostalgic tribute not long after his death). You never stated that an island choice had to be a commercial release, Doug; and if I'm not selling it, it's not a bootleg!

But if you claim that's cheating, then I'd take the score from my personal favorite movie, THE BALLAD OF CABLE HOGUE -- despite its brevity (and the CD missing half of one of my favorite cues, "The Guest"). If I would never see the film again, access to that soundtrack would help my lot ... a lot.

Which one to save from the flames? Another very hard question...
I could buy all over again, with money and a lot of patience but there is one very special for me I could'nt -- so I would pick up this one: my copy of ALWAYS because John Williams signed it to me in London, Barbican Center, on June the 30th 1996. It was just after my first and best ever film music concert .

Hey, it's John williams. What would you expect? :D

Leonard Rosenman's The Lord of the Rings.

Fairly certain I would get the most mileage out of that.
