Got this CD yesterday and after both watching the film on DVD and then listening to the CD,
I must say that Melle's music worked much better as a listening experience on CD than it did in the movie.

Kudo's to the Intrada gang for finding such a wonderful buried treasure. :D

Just placed my order!

I first became aware of the name Gil Melle by watching Rod Serling's Night Gallery when I was a kid. The electronic theme really stuck with me and forever associated the name of the composer (in my mind) with all things bizarre. Years years later I purchased a 16mm print of a weird documentary film Future Shock, for 50 cents American currency at a library discard sale and there it was, the name of Gil Melle all over again, bizarre electronics abound, the future of the world in question, hosted and narrated by a drunken, cigar smoking Orson Welles in a long black overcoat.

Love this release. Melle's music may be an acquired taste, but if you have that taste, this is manna from heaven. Thanks to the whole Intrada crew for this treat.

Perhaps my increasingly suspect mind is playing tricks on me, but did Melle recycle part or all of his main theme from this in another score? (I'm thinking about the section in track 2, "Borderline Titles", from about :28 to :44.) Professor Phillips, am I freaking out or what?

Wouldn't mind seeing some more Gil Melle scores produced and released. Proudly, I have all three of the Intrada productions, (The Andromeda Strain, The Organization and Borderline) and wouldn't hesitate to starve my own children in order to buy any forthcoming discs. Little Mario needs to go on a diet, anyway.

Here is a favorable review from the German Film Music Journal website. I found out about them from their Facebook page.

This album certainly deserves high praise. It's one thing to have excellent music, but to have such a perfect arrangement of what was recorded really makes it special.

Of all the albums I bought so far this year, Intrada's Borderline easily offers the most pleasant listening experience throughout. Of course, that might change after giving White Fang a listen.

I just noticed that this album is being deleted.

It remains my favorite of this year, despite the onslaught of more well-known goodies.

Looking through the many announcements of new releases I find so many outstanding scores that seem to get a month of enthusiastic responses, and then are not heard about much after that. This is a shame, because a score like BORDERLINE has now joined the `canon`, when I didn`t even know it existed a year ago. My favorite film composer is Jerry Goldsmith, but he has something in common with Gil Melle and Jerry Fielding when it comes to my listening--I actually don`t get into many of their scores on initial listen, and put them aside, listen again days later, and so on. In the case of BORDERLINE I initially liked it but din`t `get` it. Recently I had my itunes on random and one track of this came on and I `got` it. It actually makes a great contrast/companion to EXTREME PREJUDICE by Goldsmith--not like it in style, but complementary in approach, mixing electronics and orchestra in an action score. The care and detail and sheer amount of music here makes this a score that deserves more attention.IMHO

Well, every two weeks we can bombared by another label, so things sort of fall by the wayside. I don't think too many people ever get the chance to let a score sink in now, unless they don't buy that much.

Welcome to the board, by the way.

Thank you. Yes, what you describe is why Goldsmith talked about fans who collect soundtracks like bottlecaps. I see pictures of people`s perfect collections and I wonder how often they listen to all that music. I grew up in a time when my friends had a handful of albums they played over and over and only gradually added more volumes if they were sick of what they had. I can`t see any fans of scores today having `nothing` to listen to, and leaving this earth having only listened to the bulk of their collection once or twice. Just a theory, no real evidence to back it up but observation.

Is it much different from people who acquire practical libraries of books, most of which are probably never read?

No different at all, and just as bad, IMHO. I am guilty of both, and I think they both grow from an impulse that tells us acquiring an object is almost the same as acquiring the knowledge a book contains without actually reading it.In the case of bottlecapping, I think it`s impossible to say what the equivalent motive is, but all the same it is a confusing of the container and HAVING that thing with enjoying the artwork it carries. It is funny for me to think about the albums I wore out and replaced ages ago, and how those beloved scores had to be put aside becauseI was sick of them--that was a good thing. Years later, relistening is a new experience. To bring this back to BORDERLINE, Gil Melle deserves a large listenership, and I am so impressed by this particular score, and I just wish more people talked about the music. I don`t mean here, this is a soundtrack retailer site, but in general, where I see the same more recent scores by more prominent names worshipped over and over. There`s just SO MUCH more.
