I think Lukas did the RIGHT thing!

Let's take Logan's Run which meant to be limited to 3.000 pieces and has been printed 6.500 times. In this way there are 3.500 more people out there who are able to enjoy the music, more than double as much as there would be if FSM would not have overproduced ... and Lukas could more than double his profit!

If FSM would have pressed only 3.000 CDs, some of the 3.500 people could have buy the CD overpriced somewhere but the majority would have to get an illegal copy of the score in order to be able to listen to the music! ... Who would be happy about that? The Ebay-speculators? Yes, for sure! :wink:

... but not us the Score-Fans who are willing pay for the CD, neither the producer of the CD!!!

@ Doug & Roger: maybe it would not have been a bad idea to overproduce PREDATOR and SPACE CAMP as well? There are still lot's of people out there who would love to give you their money for a copy, but they can't because these CDs are not available.

The popular titles were relicensed and repressed. FSM stayed in business, cornerstone titles stayed in print at a reasonable cost. This was victimless; to the contrary, many people probably benefited. I purchased Where Eagles Dare and The Man from U.N.C.L.E. series long after their initial releases and I'm relatively certain that the ones I have were not of the original run. This meant that I paid the original price to the label that produced them instead of having to pony up obnoxious sums of cash in the after-market.

I am all for people getting the music. I just hate to see those people being forced to buy a score that they wanted on eBay for 3-5X the original price, if they missed out on purchasing it before it sells out from the retailers. If I miss out on a title that I want, I say, "Oh, well." I will not pay anymore than the price it was released at!

Don't announce them as limited. The deals that are made between the labels and the studios
do not need to be known. This will keep the speculators from buying them up and if a title is
not selling, the label can cut production and no one will know.

Varese's limited non club releases are considered normal releases, but with limited quantities. They have the same numbering and design as the regular releases. They are also available for download on itunes. Varese is just limiting the number of physical copies.

JNH's The Last Airbender, a regular release of a (crappy) summer blockbuster, went OOP after a couple of months. Under what should I file that case, I wonder? I was lucky enough to get a new copy for the normal price back in early September when there were still copies to be had, but how many people did miss out on this one because, well, regular releases usually don't got OOP that quickly?

At least, they didn't use to.
