My attempt:
1. "No Air" – EXPLORERS ... the moment when the three boys start plunging towards Earth in their home-made spaceship? Priceless! Goldsmith makes you feel the air rushing on your face with the swirling strings and woods, and the lurching fear in the pit of your stomach with the brass ...
2. "Dragon Encounter/Allergic Reaction" – THE SECRET OF N.I.M.H. ... really pleased to see others mentioning cues from this score, which I didn't think would be at the forefront of people's minds when considering the words "Goldsmith" and "action". I love this setpiece – opening with the ominous cello rendition of the cat's theme and exploding into a thrilling accompaniment to the action on screen, dancing between the themes for Dragon, Brisby and even Jeremy the crow so deftly.
3. "Clever Girl" – TOTAL RECALL ... so many great cues in this action epic, but I think this is the first occasion when Jerry lets rip in this score (chronologically), and it's a doozy
4. "The Elevator" or "The Big Climb" – HOLLOW MAN ... perhaps not the greatest Verhoeven/Goldsmith collaboration, but I do love that shrieking, descending string/synth figure for the elevator car lurching towards the escaping "heroes" (not that any character was particularly likeable)
5. "Out the Door" – ALIEN ... possibly not a sustained action cue per se, but you gotta love that opening salvo.
So many great cues ... but these are ones I find myself hitting the 'replay' button for every time I listen to the albums. Sometimes Jerry floors you and you need a second listen just to figure out what hit you.
