My biggest problem with Doug's constraints is that there's not enough overlap among my favorite composers' careers. While Goldsmith, Alfred Newman, Barry, Herrmann, and Delerue were all alive and active only during the 1960s, even then there's not a year that saw them all produce a favorite score of mine. However, I guess the object here was to see soundtrack fans twisting in the winds of compromise.

So my compromise is to select a year that contains one of my three favorite Goldsmiths along with at least a very good Newman, even if it's not from his top level. (But stranded on a desert isle for who-knows-how-long, I'd require the soothing effect of at least one Newman!) My year is 1966; the choices are:

THE SAND PEBBLES - Goldsmith
NEVADA SMITH - Newman
KING OF HEARTS - Delerue
BORN FREE - Barry
THE TROUBLE WITH ANGELS - Goldsmith

ANGELS overtook THE BLUE MAX in my list to keep me from despair on that island. And while choosing 1958 would have given me A CERTAIN SMILE, THE BIG COUNTRY, and VERTIGO, it also would have deprived me of any Barry or Jerry. Life is tough.

I think I'd be more concerned with polar bears, smoke monsters, various "others" making life hell.....plus if it is THAT island then food will simply drop from the sky in nondescript packaging!

I'd have to go with 1996, since that year gave me ID4 - my favorite score and Courage Under Fire - my favorite Horner score.

Oddly enough I've been on the Rocketeer kick for a while now as well. I think for me it has to do with the whole Horner/Horsemen flying info and upcoming release.

For me there is absolutely no question on this one. It has to be the magical year of 1978, which coincidentally is the first year I got really serious about film music. Just look at this, will ya...

John Williams
- THE FURY
- JAWS 2
- SUPERMAN: THE MOVIE
- DRACULA

Jerry Goldsmith
- COMA
- MAGIC
- THE BOYS FROM BRAZIL
- DAMIEN: OMEN II
- THE SWARM

Back then, John and Jerry were everything I knew about film music, so my list stops here. These were the actual records I bought and listened in that magical year (I always thought of CAPRICORN ONE as a 1978 recording, too, but I am sticking with the official release dates for this list). And I would honestly be happy if this was the only music I heard on that island.

Incidentally, the record that started it all for me was CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF THE THIRD KIND, just one year earlier. That one recording changed everything else, and I was hooked.

1985 (best year ever for film music !) :

Back to the Future - Alan Silvestri (the Intrada edition ! :D)
Cocoon - James Horner
Explorers - Jerry Goldsmith
Silverado - Bruce Broughton
The Goonies - Dave Grusin

If we all go on the same island, we could share our CDs with each other ! :D ^^

No we would just go back in time (while listening to Back to the Future indeed) and change everything wrong ! (I haven't seen the 6th season yet though)

This is a good idea but people don't like to play it, they look over at those shelves of discs, & just can't pick a handful, & you're not picking the most expensive or the really rare one. It's CD that you are happy to listen to for years to come. It does make you look at your collection in a new light. Just five is a bit mean, the BBC radio program has eight, & I would have rounded it up to ten. The important thing is that the discs have to have passed the test of time, & be real discs, not a wants list:

The Last Valley - Barry - Intrada
Journey To The Centre Of The Earth - Herrmann - Varese
Gui La Testa - Morricone - Cinevox (two disc)
Seven Cities Of Gold/Rains Of Ranchipur - Friedhoffer - Varese
In Like Flint - The LP version. A controversial choice, as it's on a boot (I'm going to get thrown out now!), but sod it, the LP was a favorite for years, & if those large record companies did what they're supposed to do, I'd have had the CD years ago.

The second five for my ten:

Grand Prix - Jare - FSM
Metti Un A Sera A Cena - Morricone - Cinevox
Casablanca: The Classic Film scores for Humphrey Bogart - RCA
The War Lord - Moross - Varese
The Comancheros - Bernstein - FSM

For me, one of my favorite years in film music is 1985.

So I might choose:

BACK TO THE FUTURE
LIFEFORCE
RAMBO II
THE JOURNEY OF NATTY GANN
SILVERADO

Gads...picking 5 from just that year is tough.

I waffle on the Goldsmith title. LEGEND might be a better pick. I don't know!
