I just re-visited this the other day and it's pretty magnificent. And actually very reminiscent of Elfman's own approach to DOLORES CLAIBORNE.

The ending piece, by the way, is not Elfman's work. It's a solo guitar arrangement of Herrmann's musical themes and harmonics, played by legend (and frequent Van Sant collaborator) Bill Frisell. Maybe this was common knowledge, but I had to do some digging to find out who it was.
