I voted for the 50s because I think the Golden Age was at his best with great scores for "adult westerns" (High Noon, Vera Cruz, The Searchers, Rio Bravo), big epics (Quo Vadis, Ben Hur, The Robe, Land of the Pharaohs), thrillers (Dial M for Murder, Vertigo, The Man Who Knew too much), dramatic films (The Man with the Golden Arm, Some Came Running) and many more.

I find it interesting how popular the 80's are (counting the votes this decade receives by the members of this board so far). It's a decade I've never really warmed up with, mostly because of the electronic mainstream in soundtracks.
