With the recent release from Lalaland of one of the best music for animated TV program (if not the best) ever produced, Batman TAS (Shirley Walker), it reminded me a time when TV cartoons had known a musical renaissance in the late 80's/early 90's with such shows as Tiny Toons (Bruce Broughton).
Incidentally, I went on the Bear McCreary fascinating blog about television scoring world and found this really interesting of the maestro of cartoon music for the past 20 years : Bruce Broughton.

What do you think of this bitter observation of today's world of animated TV scores ? Do you regret those Carl Stalling/Scott Bradley golden years ? And, for the kids of the 80's/90's, do you remember our own "golden years" when we were so lucky to have full orchestras in our favorite animated TV shows like Batman, Tiny Toons and Animaniacs ? Seems like a musical world has ended soon after that...

By the way is there a chance in the bright future of film scores limited releases that we'll listen more Tiny Toons music on CD than what has already been released on Bruce Broughton's incredibly grandiose Cartoon Concerto CD ? Now that Batman TAS has known a first CD set, everything seems possible !

I would love to see LaLaLand (or any other willing soundtrack label) release a 2-CD version of Superman: The Animated Series. Walker, McCuiston and Ritmanis also scored that show in addition to Batman, and their work is comparable to that of Batman's. (There's some really good work for the episode "The World's Finest" and "In Brightest Day.")

Now that B:tAS has seen the light of day on CD, a similar release for S:tAS would be very much appreciated.

I couldn't come up with any other existing thread to put this, so here goes. Anyone who enjoys FSM's Scott Bradley set of MGM cartoon music might get a kick out this....

The situation of animated TV scoring has been downright woeful for at least the past decade. I've been saying it for years, and every time I bring it up with my friends, they just pretend not to hear me, or they don't really understand where I'm coming from. I hate what's happened to modern cartoons - not only is the BGM garbage devoid of any discernible melody (and from what I've seen, this is pretty much across the board), but every last one of them sports the same super-cheap art style with the sharp edges and ridiculously thick outlines... it's like no Western production nowadays dares to do things the old-school way and feature fully animated characters backed by heartfelt instrumental music.

I too enjoy the scores from Tiny Toons and Animaniacs, though my favorite one is Ron Jones's work on DuckTales. I talk more about that in (there's also a I've put together to get it released on CD). If only there were more composers willing to write real music for modern-day animation!
