I just finished my first listen to the LLL release of the soundtrack to Commando, and I couldn't be happier with it. This wonderfully dynamic mix taught me that Horner's score doesn't have to be an ear bleeder. You can really crank up the volume with this mix and fully appreciate the quieter passages and the loud passages without constantly wanting to adjust the volume.

The liner notes are also wonderful. I learned more about this film than I could possibly care for. Jeff Bond's final mission didn't disappoint. :D

What does everyone else who got a hold of this CD think?

I've got the Varese Club CD of this score only, and I like playing it while driving. :-)
Really cool car driving music.

Total fave 'guilty pleasure' Horner does Zimmer nonsense - I love it to death!

And that orchestra - hell, for those who love bizarro ensembles, it's a must
have. Steel drums, shakuhachi, bass brass, saxophones, etc......great

Try taking this one to the gym - it's on my ipod always, PERFECT treadmill score :)

I too have the old Varese version... but splurged for the new. One word... FANTASTIC! The new La-La Land is awesome. 48 Hrs... Gorky Park... Commando... driving music gets a makeover...

More Horner

Sorry... just love the new version of Commando.

I can easily see the repetitive rhythms in this score making for great driving and workout music.

I also agree about this being a must have for those who take interest in oddball ensembles. The good thing about this mix and mastering job is that each instrument really has a pleasant life of its own, which does not amount in it all blending into one loud cacophony.

I simply can't get enough of this absolute frenzy of a soundtrack. The music tells a story of unbridled, yet justifiable assault so well that it almost makes you want to assume the role of John Matrix and take on some bad guys.

James Horner really did have just as much intestinal fortitude as Matrix by going with this kind of persistently atypical scoring.

If only the could get Horner to do the score to next years THE EXPENDABLES 2 in his Commando mode...

...now that would be a treat. :D

It would have at least been better than what Brian Tyler is likely to cook up. But, that film is already a virtual disaster after a stuntman lost his life on the set.
