Well, I am just now playing the (really good) 2CD set of KRULL that was released by Super Tracks in 1998, and I have to say the sound quality of that album was clearly an improvement over the previous releases.
Now La-La-Land has released pretty much the same album again, and, while I sometimes "upgrade" to a newer release just for considerably improved sound quality, it appears to me -- judged solely from online clips though -- that if the sound quality of the La-La-Land release appears to be improved, it appears to be a marginal improvement at best. Not that there is anything wrong with that, since the Super Tracks release already had clearly improved sound over the previous releases. So there is no misunderstanding: it's cool that La-La-Land released this landmark score of Horner's early career again and I'm positive it's an excellent release with excellent sound that will sell out rather swiftly, but it seems that if one has the Super Tracks release, an "upgrade" is not vital.
Can anybody who has both releases confirm or differ?

I only have the Supertracks release (since 1998 ! ) and I'm really happy with it ! I don't think Lalaland can do any better for a score of that age with similar analog tapes...

I mainly upgraded because it is normal jewel case rather than the big bulky quad case.


Plus the "Theme from Krull" is pretty cool.

The sound quality upgrade is extremely minor, although it is there. You mostly hear it in the quieter portions of the score, harp plucks are more distinct, there is a sheen on the strings and the whole affair has a slightly more natural soundfield than the Super Tracks release. The brass is a little less "cutting," so there are times when the Super Tracks release sounds a bit more aggressive. But again, very subtle.

Well just a couple months before the new Krull was released I had finally tracked down the expanded Southern Cross release to replace the previous LP presentation.
I feel the SCCE contains all the best moments of the score on one disc IMHO, and its more convenient for me to have it all on one disc.

The sound quality is really good. The newer versions may be better, but not by a huge degree. I sampled the La-La Land version and all I detected was a raise in the string mix and a slight bump in bass. Not that big of a deal for me. So I decided to keep my SCCE for now.

There will be a naysayer for everything, and the SCSE edition always had one big omission for me: "Vella." This is one of those prime 80s Horner cues with that dark piano coming in. Otherwise, I agree that it is indeed an excellent presentation of the score.

I do like La-La Land's mastering and the bonus tracks are nice.

An interesting side story to coincides with the recent re-release of the KRULL soundtrack.

Seeing as I never owned this score, the new LaLaLand release was quite welcome. I am looking forward to listening to it this weekend (hopefully).
