Good thing I never went into the military - I'd have poked someone's eye out for sure! Doug, seems to me you've mentioned that you dig arranging for band, right? Or am I remembering that wrong? Anyway, I thought people might like this.

Actually, I did (and do) compose for band, but not as an arranger for marching band rather as a composer for symphonic band. (Symphonic bands add all those cool things like oboes, bassoons, Eb clarinets and whatnot to the woodwinds and so forth.) Anyway, this group is great fun to watch, especially with all of the brass players having silver horns. Pretty splashy!!

Just for your info: The full name of the arranger for the Morricone piece that appears halfway through the show is Johann de Meij, a sensational band composer in his own right. Those curious to hear more from de Meij can check out one of many professional and military concert band recordings of his massive original band piece entitled "Lord Of The Rings", based on the Tolkien story. Pure excitement to play and a great challenge to conduct!

I love de Meij's "Lord of the Rings" Symphony. I'm only familiar with the version by the Quebec Wind & Percussion Ensemble, and it's great. But anyone who goes looking for a copy, my advice is that you should avoid the version with the London Symphony Orchestra (or at least not make it your first exposure), which was not orchestrated by the composer. I don't know if it was done with his approval -- it might very well have been -- but my own opinion is that it loses something in translation.

I'd be curious to know if you have a favorite version, Doug!
