I glanced at what's being offered, couldn't honestly say it's anything I would be interested in. As for the next guy, who knows? Perhaps there are a few who might like it.

I don't like the idea of buying dematerialized music + I don't like the idea of buying compressed music in 2010 when the 1411 kbps CD has been existing for 30 years + I don't like the idea of buying isolated tracks separated from their respective albums.
So you have my answer...

Well, I do agree with Doug in the way of getting the music out there, but with
today's ability to search the web, if I wanted a piece of music and came across
3-5 different versions of a piece I would look for the original. A good example
is my family, well, they do listen to some scores, but their taste is music is not
quite mine, stretching from opera to rock, even a little rap and country! My
daughter was looking for a rock song and 3 version showed up on iTunes. She
did not know which one she wanted. She called my other daughter in and they
listened to each one, only to pick the original release over the other 2 which
were by different performers.

Don't get me wrong, I have loved what Varese, Intrada and TRIBUTE FILM CLASSICS
have done with their score performances, making new recordings of certain scores,
but these are more like concert performances. I also love the 2 CDs I have of Jerry
Goldsmith concerts. But, these are really close to sounding like the original scores.
I guess I will have to listen to the Dennis McCarthy DS9 Main Title that Nick mentioned,
being performed by the original composer, would give it a different take and would be
interesting. But, when I listened to Gremlin Rag or The Theme from "Hoosiers" I was
not impressed and left wondering why anyone would enjoy this over the originals.
Oh, well.
Thanks WorkingWithKnives and Anakin McFly for your input.

Oh for Pete's sake..what is the problem? Some of the BSX downloads are pretty darned good. .99 a pop, it is hard to go wrong. Some are just bang on terrific, some - as Ford said - are meant to bring the themes to new audiences with a new sound. The version of the Hoosiers theme I didn't care for but, the funkier takes on Psycho 2 and Warlock are kinda neat.

Stuff like Silvestri's Bodyguard theme work very well, some are better than others sure, but, each week I look for new BSX downloads. They're fun. There are some full orchestral tracks as well. You can always sample them before buying.

Good stuff. Keep them coming, sez me.

The Fright Night theme is very nice - not a slave to the original but it captures the flavor well, it's mine now.

Also on the BSX site is the A.I.D.S Requiem by Dennis McCarthy, a short but LOVELY piece, everyone should own, for .99 no less.

There are some nice Vangelis covers as well, from Bitter Moon, The Bounty and more. Theme from The Deep ( a very nice piano piece) McCarthy's Film Noir Suite and a few other McCarthy overtures to boot. Good to know these are selling and spurring more recordings.

Also these appeal to an audience outside of the normal film score community, so if the versions aren't carbon copies of the originals, they won't mind. If you want a huge laugh, go read the iTunes reviews for Goldsmith's Hoosiers/Best Shot soundtrack, where almost every reviewer claims "this is a cheap rerecording, where's the REAL music?"
