Clint Eastwood.
He gets bashed constantly for his sparse and minimal approach to composing themes. Some people even say it's not "real film music", whatever the hell that means. Real to who?
Bottom line: Eastwood's approach, while maybe not everyone's cup of tea, is usually highly effective and perfectly suited for the stories he tells. If anyone is paying attention, they might notice that Eastwood favors subtlety in just about every aspect of his filmmaking. Case in point, the recently released CHANGELING, which I found to be his most moving and lovliest theme since UNFORGIVEN. But people bitch about his scores being nominated for awards, etc. Eastwood's contributions are no less valuable than a "traditional" film composer who uses a full orchestra and fills every piece with umpteen notes. Hmmph!
