It pleases me to see collectors talk about a community. Movie music is our cause but when people think of it like it's... well, like a gift to share - or something like that - I figure we're better off. When I first wrote the column that seems to have generated this topic, I was primarily urging people to look for the bright side to all of this music coming out, even when a limited item disappears before everyone gets one.
To this end, even speculators have a place, contrary to some opinions. Customers willing to gamble on their purchases help keep the product flowing, generating more projects. In a sense, even the soundtrack labels are speculating since they're gambling resources on CDs they hope will have appeal to the marketplace.
Maybe I'm being maudlin but the community does work better when people communicate in mostly positive gestures. (Okay. That does sound maudlin.)
