Well Brainstorm is available from Varese, albeit as a rerecording. It would be interesting to have a release of the original of course, but I'd rather see the soundtrack labels channel their efforts into scores which are not available in any form.

Certainly the Varese rerecording is as good a recording as the soundtrack. Maybe even better -- it is the London Symphony after all, with Horner conducting, and recorded by Eric Tomlinson at Abby Road -- you can't do much better than that!

As for Wargames, that never really was adequately presented on disc. Arthur B. Rubinstein called the original album "a complete debacle".

And If I remember correctly, the actual Brainstorm soundtrack isn't much lenghtier than Horner's awesome LSO rerecording. But there were a few changes made in the orchestrations. During Lilian's Heart attack especially where the LSO recording features clanging mettalic percussion absent in the the film version. But it should be interesting to be able to compare both takes. The actual film sessions were done at MGM and mixed by Shawn Murphy, with the Paulist Choristers of California. This chorale also performed on Danny Elfman's Edward Scissorhands soundtrack.

War Games would make a very nice CD, provided the barn-storming orchestral cues are presented in their chronological order, with the 80s pop music sequenced at the end of the program. I have agree with Mr. Rubinstein: the original LP was absolutely horrible and left out many stand out cues i had grown to love upon seeing this movie way back in '84, those dealing with Joshua in particular. And the irritating dialogue excerpts didn't help much. A great score!
