Intrada's latest release is Mark Mothersbaugh's score to the new DreamWorks Animation film featuring the Crood family. Released in theaters on November 25th, The Croods: A New Age brings the beloved prehistoric family back, having survived their share of dangers and disasters, they face their biggest challenge of all: another family. The Croods need a new place to live and when they discover an idyllic walled-in paradise that meets all their needs, they think their problems are solved ... except one thing. Another family already lives there: the Bettermans. The Croods: A New Age features the voice talent of returning stars Nicolas Cage as Grug Crood, Catherine Keener as Ugga Crood, Emma Stone as their daughter, Eep; Ryan Reynolds as Eep’s boyfriend, Guy; Clark Duke (Hot Tub Time Machine) as Thunk and Cloris Leachman as Gran. They’re joined by new stars Peter Dinklage (HBO’s Game of Thrones) as Phil Betterman, Leslie Mann (Blockers) as Hope Betterman, and Kelly Marie Tran (Star Wars: Episode VIII-The Last Jedi) as their daughter, Dawn.
For this sequel, composer Mark Mothersbaugh follows in the footsteps of Alan Silvestri, composer of the first film, with a large, orchestral score. Mothersbaugh was in the middle of scoring when the pandemic hit. Two themes had just been completed – the main theme which became the basis for the vocal "We're All Here Together" and a space-aged, bachelor-pad-infused theme for the Bettermans. The composer conducted the rest of the process over Zoom and recorded the score remotely at Abbey Road. Mothersbaugh was recovering from COVID-19 himself while moving on to the vocals, detailing the challenges in his liner notes of getting these across the finish line. The vocals are performed by Tenacious D, HAIM, and Jack Black.
The composer is no stranger to scoring animated films, having composed music for the Lego movies as well as Hotel Transyvlania 3. Both director Joel Crawford producer and Mark Swift, while full of creative suggestions, gave Mothersbaugh free reign, even while incapacitated by the virus, to deliver the perfect score for the film. For the composer, it would be an amazing journey and for the Croods, the start of a new adventure and a new life.
The film will be released on video-on-demand December 18th.
