The original 1987 release of Jerry Goldsmith's score to Rent-a-Cop was one of Intrada's earliest releases. Now some 22 years later, Intrada revisits this romantic, crime-thriller score and presents it in a complete, newly remastered edition. Goldsmith's use of electronics rose in the '80s, not only within the music itself, but also as his primary tool for composing. Goldsmith was so taken with the romantic angle of this film that he chose to compose the love theme on piano -- a throwback to his earlier composing style. The romantic theme for the film is truly inspired, and his electronics brings a contemporary, slick feel to the action and suspense music the film required.
In Rent-a-Cop, Burt Reynolds stars as Tony Church, a straight-arrow Chicago detective whose career is ruined when his latest sting operation goes horribly wrong. Church is the only survivor and he helps save a hooker named Della Roberts (Liza Minnelli) from the leatherclad, helmeted killer, who she glimpsed moments before the massacre. When Church’s precinct commander (John P. Ryan) accuses him of setting up the theft and being on the take, he quits, taking a job as a lowly department store rent-a-cop. Undercover as Santa Claus, Church tries to nab a shoplifter but is interrupted by a desperate, disguised Della, who has survived an attempt on her life and hires Church to guard her...an assignment that turns out to be far more dangerous than he could have imagined.
This release of Jerry Goldsmith’s music for Rent-A-Cop features the complete score, edited and mastered directly from the original two-track mixes made at CBS Studios in London. For the 1988 LP, Goldsmith selected 36 minutes of music and sequenced the cues for the best listening experience. This CD presents the entire score in picture order, including the addition of the climactic action cue, "Flash Bomb," which was omitted from the original release.
