New music to go with chocolate eggs and meaningful Easter celebrating. On deck here for Tuesday release is Miklos Rozsa’s dynamic, classic-style soundtrack - his final such effort - for Carl Reiner’s 1982 film noir homage, Dead Men Don’t Wear Plaid, starring Steve Martin, a 2-CD set released as part of the ongoing Universal Pictures Film Music Classics Collection. Also available at last is Laurence Rosenthal’s masterpiece, Becket, retaining the original stereo program that Rosenthal assembled back in 1964. It’s an absolutely massive work for orchestra and chorus, played by the Sinfonia Of London under Muir Mathieson.

Recently made available again is Jerry Goldsmith’s sensational 1966 epic, The Sand Pebbles. Our previous 2-CD set has been given a revisit with some modest tweaks to the audio and a re-sequencing that places Goldsmith’s (and our) favorite “Overture” at the start with the other version playing as an overture to the second half of the score - and now on the same disc, allowing listeners to enjoy both magnificent pieces without having to flip the discs. Golly!
