If you own the 1998 Warner Home Video set which included a remastered CD, then you will understand the uniqueness of that release. It marked the premiere release of about half of the dramatic music Schifrin composed plus some source music and a specially composed trailer. What was recorded represents the first day session: the composer was dismissed on the second by director Friedkin. Without getting into the reasons for this creative rupture (the composer and director's accounts completely diverge), this is incredibly exciting and evocative music, very much a trial run for the composer's later acclaimed music for THE AMITYVILLE HORROR. Though what was recorded was far too short for an album, there's scope to add a further Warners score which has never been issued (ST IVES? THE MASTER GUNFIGHTER?). It's a shame somebody hasn't recorded the entire score, but at least we have these one day sessions.
