I'm just a novice and sorry if my post sounds silly. I noticed the drums especially for the opening credits sound better from the dvd release. Don't get me wrong I love that Intrada released ST VI with alternates and the trailer.
Just a thought.

Long story short, for well over 27 years now the Star Trek VI score has been my favorite score across all Video Games, TV and Movies. When the expanded score came out a few years ago, I had it on loop for hours on end. Re-watching Star Trek VI this weekend on Blu-Ray reminded me that we haven't gotten a straight from the source (24bit/96hz or higher) release. I know there's debate on whether you can actually hear a difference between a lossless CD and an HD release, but there's something to be said about having the exact recording of the score knowing 0 information was lost. That being said, is there any chance of an HD release? |

For those curious I did take some time out this morning to do my comparison. Expanded CD (lossless rip): Blu-Ray Dolby TruHD 7.1 mixdown: I do prefer listening to the expanded release's mix after comparing them side by side (granted it's one song from the whole score) - nonetheless, will be interesting if we get a UHD remaster with a new DTS-MA or Dolby Atmos mix to compare to down the road. |

The mix and master used for Intrada's release is probably the final say for this score on a stereo album. A studio such as Paramount allows the industry's most devoted to work on these expanded releases partly for the purpose of optimal preservation. The resolution provided is of course another situation, but I doubt something like a 192/24 presentation would do much here. However, mixing/mastering at that resolution is always great for headroom purposes. |

As an interesting bit of coincidence, LLL's expansion for The Swarm is apparently MQA-encoded, thus allowing 176/24 playback through an MQA decoder. A bit gimmicky overall, but neat nonetheless. |
