Though this would seem a project more suited to a European label like Quartet or Music Box, I still want to make the case for it. This is one of the composer's greatest achievements from his early period. Because the film is so operatic in scope, it's inevitable the music is also full-blooded and vital. I have the French WEA edition, and I found the sound somewhat 'veiled'. (Interestingly I also heard a reviewer describe the sonics on the Varese Sarabande edition as 'strident'.) It would seem that, after more than a quarter of a century, there's a case for re-mastering. This magnificent music should be heard in its best aspect. (There probably wouldn't be a scope for an expanded edition, but who knows?)
