Post subject:  YOUNG WINSTON by Alfred Ralston & Edward Elgar

While Alfred Ralston was an excellent supervisor of the music for Richard Attenborough's directorial debut (OH! WHAT A LOVELY WAR), he was less assured as a dramatic composer. This is fairly evident in his music for YOUNG WINSTON. Though both Attenborough and producer Carl Foreman praised Ralston's contribution in the liner notes of the LP, in fact a fair amount of the music in the album wasn't used in the movie. To me a lot of it comes across as somewhat naïve film scoring. So why do I want it on CD? For primarily one reason: "Jennie's Theme" is truly head and shoulders above the rest of the score. Anyone wanting to premiere this on CD, however, will face a problem. With the dissolution of the EMI music group several years ago, two separate corporate entities now have the rights to this catalogue. If I take a hunch, I'd say Warner Classics has the rights. (If not, then it would be Universal Music.)
