Having just learned of the death of famed recording engineer Keith Grant (although it happened six years ago), I'm moved to wonder whether a better sounding edition of NEVER SAY NEVER AGAIN is possible. Of course there are many who loathe this score, and consider it the antithesis of a Bond score. Leaving aside the source cues, it does however demonstrate what an eccentric composer like Legrand can do with such an untypical project. It's always amazed me how suppressed the release of this score has been, starting with the Japan-only release of the original LP. (Unfortunately Silva' s CD incarnation a decade later is still plagued with the same disappointing sound quality.) Again, no mention of the performers (London Symphony Orchestra) or the mixing engineer or venue (as with the LP). Never say never indeed?
