2017 marks the 50th anniversary of the death of Franz Waxman, so hopefully there will be some releases to commemorate this master composer. Even though Waxman has been very well represented by specialist labels in the last 25 years, there are still opportunities here. Although scores like PRINCE VALIANT, THE NUN'S STORY and THE STORY OF RUTH (to name a few) merit new editions which can take advantage of advances in audio restorative technology, I've primarily suggested YOUNG MAN as it seems to have been out of print the longest. (In fact if I recall it was one of the earliest "symphonic" scores committed to the then new CD technology.) It would appear that this (originally RCA) album may have used the original movie tracks (as inferred by the involvement of the 20th Century-Fox Orchestra). Thanks to the detailed liner notes of Royal S. Brown for the Entr'acte LP re-issue, it's apparent that a fair amount of the music on the album did not appear in the movie. Is there scope for a further expansion of the score? Perhaps if the movie track elements are still in good enough condition. I don't need to extoll the score itself: it's one of the most beautiful and effecting of the composer's "mature" period. I'd much rather have a new edition of this than, say, the premiere on CD of LOST COMMAND, his final feature film score.

I was just thinking about this great Franz Waxman score and Peyton Place yesterday. I would buy new CD releases of both in a flash! Always hoping! :D

Already in 2015 MV Gerhard wrote on the FSM board that HEMINGWAY is a "no go" for his label and that no additional music tracks exist anymore at the studios. Read for yourself:

"We could still do Hemingway as well but it would be the lp master. Nothing new added just like Peyton. Would 1500 of you buy it? I need to commit to 2500 units with Sony Music and at least 1500 units would get us around the break even point.

And no Sony does not have anything either. We have checked out unmentionables and the quality is just awful and not worth releasing.

MV"

Thanks for taking me to task but, believe it or not, I don't read every single post that appears on FSM. And I'd be happy with a new remastering of the YOUNG MAN LP since the original 1980's CD transfer was a bit on the rough side (as compared to the LP which Label "X" released at the same time, which was close to ideal).

Back in 1971 I was checking out all the old record stores in Massachusetts and Rhode Island in search of soundtrack LPs.
In Rhode Island I found a new Stereo copy of ADVENTURES OF A YOUNG MAN! Boy, was I thrilled! It's a beautiful score and I too would love to see a newly restored CD of it. Instant buy! :)

It has been pointed out that there probably won't be scope for an expanded edition using the original music elements. However there is material which doesn't appear on the LP which can be found on a 14-minute suite Elmer Bernstein recorded in Germany for an RCA Waxman anthology issued in the mid '90's.
