Upon learning of the imminent closure of the CTS Studios at Wembley in 2000, Maurice Jarre urged producer James Fitzpatrick to "rescue" whatever he could. As detailed in his producer notes for the fairly recent Quartet edition of A PASSAGE TO INDIA, Fitzpatrick did indeed render a valuable service to film music and "saved" the multi-track session tapes for MAD MAX BEYOND THUNDERDOME, A PASSAGE TO INDIA and THE BRIDE. So far we've already had "expanded" editions of the first two titles. Can we be optimistic about the third? It's over a decade since the Varese Club release of the LP program. I'm sure I speak for many who are waiting for THE BRIDE to be "resurrected". (If Varese have an ongoing option then there's nothing more to be said...)

There might not be much missing music, but I'd bet the sound could be improved having the original multitrack as a source rather than just the Varese album master...

I would concur with Roger on the basis above. However James Fitzpatrick attended the original recording sessions and he says that the movie scored by Jarre was not the one eventually released. Whether this means a considerable amount of footage was lost (or simply the ending changed), I can only speculate. At the very least it would appear the music for the Finale was changed as there was a further recording session(s?) several months later. And we can't forget that less than half of the music which appeared on the Capitol LP (and subsequent DRG CD) of A PASSAGE TO INDIA, actually was heard in the film. But even if Varese resurrected this title in the near future for their Encore series (i.e. without any additional music) I wouldn't hesitate getting it. In my opinion (and I'm sure of many others) it's some of Jarre's most intoxicating music of the '80's.

If Varese didn't want to press a thousand copies, why not have this in their 500 series?

In regard to Varese's 500 series, I initially thought it was a revamping of their LP to CD series (except with better packaging). Maybe AGNES OF GOD sold out so quickly, they've decided it's a bit redundant and better to stick with a minimum of one thousand copies. Or maybe the next one is just around the corner?
