Post subject:  Friedhofer and Harline Recommendations

Hey guys, lately I've been on a hunt for more golden age scores, specifically by two of the greats; Hugo Friedhofer and Leigh Harline. I have Bride of Vengeance/Captain Carey U.S.A. and now Wild Harvest/Thunder In the East/No Man of Her Own by Friedhofer, and Good Morning Miss Dove!/Black Widow by Harline. So my question is, what other scores by these two can you guys recommend? Thanks

I haven't embraced either of them in general, despite the fact that my own late Golden-Age mentor revered both composers. I have tried several works by each, hoping to experience the Friedhofer or Harline score for which lightning would finally strike. For comparison, I'll say that my three favorites are Goldsmith, Alfred Newman, and John Barry, each of whom wrote multiple scores which "spoke to me" as albums, even without having seen their respective films.

Having said that to let you decide how near or far my tastes may be to yours, my top Harline is PINOCCHIO (some cues by Paul Smith but my favorites are all credited to Harline). The Friedhofers I appreciate most are BOY ON A DOLPHIN in full, plus several of his cues from THE BRAVADOS and AN AFFAIR TO REMEMBER.

I think PINOCCHIO and BRAVADOS are still readily available. But if you're opening yourself to the Golden Age and haven't yet heard much Alfred Newman, you might have paradise ahead!

There are two Leigh Harline scores I would love to have on CD, but unfortunately the common belief right now is that no musical elements exist for the Mirisch production of Gary Cooper's MAN OF THE WEST. The other one is from RKO's FROM THIS DAY FORWARD in 1946. With regard to Hugo Friedhofer, I would love to have CD'S
for WHITE FEATHER and THREE CAME HOME. I hope someday Intrada will bring back their Excalibur recordings with a recording of Hugo Friedhofer's masterpiece, JOAN OF ARC. Not only is JOAN OF ARC a dream of mine, I know it is a favorite of Doug Fake and he's the man who could do it. Here's hoping.

I've never heard a Hugo Friedhofer score I didn't like, my faves on CD are:

One-Eyed Jacks
Seven Cities Of Gold
In Love & War
Boy On A Dolphin
The Rains Of Ranchipur

Most of these are sold out now, but I see you can still buy the re-release of One-Eyed Jacks from Kritzerland, what a fantastic soundtrack, & the remaining few will go fast once the Blu-ray is released ( which hopefully won't be too long). I have a few Leigh Harline's, but I don't tend to listen to them much these days, funny, as my most wanted fifties soundtrack is Harline's, 24 Paces To Baker Street, & my most wanted Friedhofer is White Feather (both Fox), I wonder if the tapes have survived for these films. I do miss those Fox fifties two-fer Intrada releases.

...& I see Friedhofer's THE RAINS OF RANCHIPUR/SEVEN CITIES OF GOLD/THE BLUE ANGEL two-CD set is still available at Kritzerland records, like One-Eyed Jacks, a must have.
