There is certainly scope for an expanded CD for this 1985 mini-series with Gabriel Byrne in the title role. As if the original Italian soundtrack wasn't short enough, Varese tampered with it further for its U.S. release. (Looking at the front cover of the LP one could be mistaken for thinking it was a Placido Domingo album!) This is really some of Ortolani's most feverish orchestral writing and should be heard in a fuller form. (Disclosure: I'm not overly fond of Ortolani's music in general, but this is an exception.) |
