A movie which spends a lot of time establishing a train of thought, and then subverts it in the last few minutes, would cause a problem for any composer. So perhaps that may explain why Steiner's main theme is a rather square-jawed, upbeat march. Whether irony is intended, will probably be up to the sensibilities of each listener/viewer. The composer's craftsmanship is on display in spades and would undoubtedly interest fans of the composer. But as Roger has pointed out the unsatisfactory music archiving at Columbia Pictures, I have a sinking feeling that this will never see the light of day. It's not one of Steiner's longer scores (and the last quarter of the movie is largely unscored) and, if available, the original tracks might be complemented by the famous RCA LP program (one side of which consists of the entire trial sequence). As Steiner was engaged in a recording program with RCA at the time, I suspect that the music tracks on the LP were re-recordings.
