Post subject:  THE EMIGRANTS by Erik Nordgren

Now that a re-issue of the only available film music by this composer (THE BERGMAN SUITES) has just been announced by Naxos, maybe it's time to explore further scores by Nordgren. Undoubtedly the highest profile work he did in this field, apart from his work for Bergman, was for the 1970 Jan Troell-directed movie THE EMIGRANTS, which had a fairly high profile release for a foreign film in the U.S. at the time, and several months ago the movie made its DVD/Blu-ray debut through The Criterion Collection. The problem is, that while the music is beautifully-judged and sophisticated, there is very little in the 3 hour movie. So what could be a companion? Though stylistically very different, possibly Michael Franks' score for ZANDY'S BRIDE of 1974 (also directed by Troell and also starring Liv Ullmann). But I'm sure there is scope for other combinations from the Warner Brothers music vaults.
