Tom Schiller's "Nothing Lasts Forever" is a film that's never gotten the exposure that it deserves. Produced in 1982 by Lorne Michaels with original cast and crew members from SNL and scored by Michaels' buddy, Howard Shore, MGM was expecting a marketable comedy and instead was delivered a bizarre art film which is sort of a precursor to "Brazil." With a cameo by Dan Ackroyd and starring Zach Galligan and Bill Murray, the movie got a tiny 2-week release in Seattle on the heels of "Gremlins" and "Ghostbusters" (most likely to fulfill a contractual screening obligation), but it's mostly been relegated to the vaults ever since. It screens very occasionally, has popped up on international TV, and aired once on TCM in the USA, but MGM has repeatedly gone out of their way to bury the film (yanking a second airing on TCM, sending a cease-and-desist to a theater that was screening it, killing YouTube uploads, etc.), for reasons that have never been clear. But now that MGM has a new owner, perhaps the movie can finally get a decent release... and drumming up interest in the soundtrack might help that happen.

The final line in the closing credits is "Soundtrack Album Available on Warner Bros. Records." Total b.s., an album was never issued. And it's a shame too, since Shore created a lush orchestral score and there are several memorable tunes (such as the title song, performed by Mara Beckerman and lipsynced by future-star Lauren Tom). Shore went on to make a name for himself, and it'd be nice to finally have this bit of his work on disc.
