Doug and Roger, there has been a lot of talk of Max Steiner's THE HANGING TREE at the FSM message board. Intrada is THE company to take this on!

THE HANGING TREE music tracks are at Warner Bros. and are nearly complete! It's one of Max's best scores and being a western film and in color this would ad to the sales potential of such a great CD!

Intrada HAS issued WB CDs including RIO BRAVO, THE MIRACLE, DAYS OF WINE AND ROSES etc. Fine scores all.

THE HANGING TREE is a score I have wanted for a long time. A 6 minute suite can be found at youtube. I hope Doug or Roger will make a comment on PFK's suggestion. It is definitely worthy of a release.

This was Doug's comment from last year about the possibility of Steiner WB scores on Intrada:

"Steiner at WB is on our list, as is a vast amount of stuff over there and elsewhere. But as Roger has often pointed out, even if we wave money in front of these good folks, they work at their own pace, not ours. But in fairness, it's that the various legal teams at their end are all overworked and perpetually swamped with agreements and paperwork to review. Things eventually happen, but we've learned to be patient. We have so many irons in the fire these days, if it takes years to put together Rio Bravo or Cahill: US Marshal or Summer Of '42 or whatever else we're bugging WB about, we've no shortage of things to do in the meantime."

Of course, I would also love to get THE HANGING TREE on CD, but I suppose that there are certainly a lot of legal hassles involved with this score in the same vein as it was with RIO BRAVO. You have WB, the Gary Cooper estate and the publishers of the "Hanging Tree" song, all of whom have to be brought together to get it licensed. I can imagine that this is not an easy situation.
Nevertheless, it would be nice to hear if such a project is financially feasible at all or not these days. For Fielding's JUNIOR BONNER we at least heard that it would cost too much money to get it released. But no one has commented yet anything about THE HANGING TREE.

Yes, we often read about approvals taking a long time at Warner Bros.

Only a couple or a few Warner-owned titles seem to get released a year by Intrada as of late, though they are all choice in my opinion. La-La Land is the only other label releasing scores from the studio with some regularity, and they have their own audience to cater to (they do still graciously throw a Golden Age bone every now and then).

These guys are undoubtedly doing their best to make everyone happy. It's the myriad customers like me who prefers stuff like Her Alibi, The Postman Always Rings Twice, The Picasso Summer, Cahill, Fandango and Falling Down who are messing things up for Golden Age music lovers. Sorry about that.

Hi PFK, well, I just wanted to bring it to your attention because in your message above you said that the Scannan label was "from England"! But no matter, they certainly released some nice CDs. Of course I do have them in my collection, and delighted to have them, as you know I buy every such release that comes out, how could you ask, lol! I did remember indeed that your grandfather left Ireland for Boston, although I couldn't swear on the year!
