The score written for this movie by Michael Kamen is a beautiful score which CD is out of print and runs for quite a bit of money these days. It would be nice for a re-issue of this terrific score. Apparently Ennio Morricone wrote a score that was rejected in favor of Kamen's score. It would be nice to hear what he came up with. |

Someone from La-La Land really wants at least Morricone's rejected score released, so there are probably significant issues that have been holding it up. It would be a fantastic album. |

I was able to hear about half an hour of Morricone's score (albeit in horrendous sound quality). I suspect the decision to reject it was not director Vincent Ward's, but the producers. (This movie was actually produced by the film arm of the then record giant PolyGram.) Apart from the disarming simplicity of Morricone's approach, it has more overtly 'liturgical' elements which may have alienated the producers. (I'm reminded of the occasion when Bernard Herrmann allegedy ejected William Friedkin from his London residence. When hearing that Herrmann wanted to use the organ for THE EXORCIST, Friedkin supposedly said he didn't want "Catholic music"!!! No wonder Herrmann lost his temper...) |
