I still would like to see a complete re-recording of "The Vikings". The Legend label release has such poor sound quality, it's like listening to a score on an old transistor radio. |

The Legend re-issue of this score (which first appeared on LP in 1988, and subsequently tranferred to CD some years later, sounds considerably better than the vinyl album released on the United Artists label in the late '50's (and which I believe stayed in the U.S. catalogue for some 2 decades). The sonics on the latter were simply horrendous, while at least the Legend edition is listenable. In fact a 17-minute suite from THE VIKINGS was recorded in Prague a few years back for the Silva anthology WARRIORS OF THE SILVA SCREEN. (This was condensed to some 10-minutes for a subsequent Silva 4-disc anthology EPICS:THE HISTORY OF THE WORLD ACCORDING TO HOLLYWOOD.) Even without HDCD encoding, the sound is what one would expect. |
