Now that we've sat through all the indignities heaped upon the characters in 12 Years A Slave, could we possibly see a release of Maurice Jarre's Mandingo from Paramount in 1975? |

A very worthwhile enterprise, and I even liked the credits vocal as performed by Muddy Waters. It begs the question, though, whether Jarre actually scored the extended version (which is supposedly around 3 hours long) or the version which appeared in theatres (which was about an hour shorter). If the latter, I suspect there'd be an effort to couple MANDINGO with another unreleased Jarre score for Paramount. FIVE CARD STUD would probably be too long, what about PLAZA SUITE? Like the composer's other comedy scores, it's an extremely engaging work. |

I have the DVD and there's plenty of music there. I didn't know about a longer version of the film, but if that's for real, then there must be reels of unreleased music waiting to go. The film has a lot going against it, mostly from people who've never bothered to actually watch it. It made money and there was even a sequel called Drum. So how about it, Intrada? Could you look into this gem of a score? |

1 please ![]() The 2 cues on the 4 cd Universal France sounded a mite rough mono, so I certainly hope Intrada would work their magic on this project someday. ... -Sean |

Intrada is over there at Paramount- unless the tapes are non-existant, okay then. But if they are, I hope the stigma attached to the film isn't what's keeping it from being released. I'm sure it would be a big seller for them and an even bigger catch for us. |

It's only in the U.S. that the movie is so poorly regarded. I suspect that the historical element was so embarassing to so many liberal commentators at the time, that the response was to jeer at it instead. Overseas the response has been much kinder. In fact, I wish I could recall the movie magazine which described it as a masterpiece. Does anyone recall? |
