Now that we've gotten releases of the bulk of Disney's dark late 1970s/early '80s movies (the first Witch Mountain, Return to Oz, The Black Hole, The Black Cauldron, Condorman, both versions of Something Wicked..., etc.), there are two holy grails left for me, and both are from 1980: Midnight Madness & The Watcher in the Woods.
"Midnight Madness" is one of those movies where the music itself is a character - and it's sort of a shame that it's the only feature Julius Wechter ever scored. Between the groovy original disco songs and the oft-recurring theme for Harold and the blue team, it's a really memorable and instantly-recognizable soundtrack for a beloved cult classic which is crying out for a lavish release.
Stanley Myers composed a pretty solid horror/thriller score for "Watcher in the Woods" and, given the movie's legendary history (released, pulled from circulation, drastically cut, reworked and re-released a year later), I'm certain there's a lot of music that was recorded which has never seen the light of day (or at the very least, hasn't been heard for almost 40 years!)... and anything we can do to encourage Disney to give John Hough a shot at assembling the director's cut that he's long-dreamed of compiling is a plus. The director's cut almost happened 20 years ago, but an idiotic conflict between Disney and distributor Anchor Bay killed it. I'm still holding out hope that it'll happen someday.
"Midnight Madness" spawned real-life great all-nighters and "Watcher in the Woods" has already received the dreaded-remake treatment, so obviously these are both films with loyal fanbases who'd doubtlessly buy the albums.
