Although this score comes so early in the composer's career that he still billed himself as "Patrick John Scott", the quality that we've come to expect from this composer are still highly evident. Scott has drawn great inspiration from dramas set during the British Raj in India (THE DECEIVERS, MOUNTBATTEN) and this is no exception. This features truly luminous orchestral writing and thematic invention. (The only drawback is a rather jarring pop vocal, but this can be forgiven considering the overall wealth of the material. The Paramount vaults may yield more material than was originally released on the 1967 Atco label. (The movie starred Yul Brynner and Trevor Howard.) |

We could certainly use more early John Scott scores that remain unreleased on CD, and this seems like one of the most doable of the bunch. Well, it at least appears more doable than Billy Two Hats or Doomwatch. Just the Atco program through Warner Music Group would be good if that's all that is reasonably available. |

Excellent score. I'd buy this one without a second thought. |
