I just got the Warner Archive DVD of this and watched it for the first time in a while and I gotta say that even though I'm the only person on the planet who likes this movie, it still holds up pretty damn' good. Charlton Heston does so much with what could've been a sub-par Hammer leading role that I suppose most people who see this are thrown by the depth and complexity of his performance. I can't recall a leading actor of his stature embracing an obsessed character like that so completely without insisting on at least three "awww, he pet the dog" scenes to mitigate the unpleasantness inherent in such a role. If his strategy was to make the obsession in the early part of the film understandable to an audience, I'd say he succeeded like few others have.
Claude Bolling's wonderful score has been running around in my head for years. A few themes have shown up on compilations in the CD era but the only score release that shows up on soundtrackcollector.com is the original LP back in the day. Any chance one of our enterprising labels might tackle this one? Seems like a Kritzerland thing more than anyone else - Bruce Kimmel can add another composer to his ever-growing roster and instantly sell a squillion copies, this being an '80s film and all.
